Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested 170 Rohingyas, including men, women, and children, for leaving their camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf without permission.
The arrests took place on Tuesday across Teknaf Upazila. Afterward, the detainees were handed over to the unit leaders, locally known as majhis, of their respective camps.
Among the detainees, 88 are men, 50 are women, and 32 are children.
Ismail, a Majhi from the 26th Rohingya camp in Jadimura, stated that the administration has regularly warned the Rohingyas through loudspeakers and meetings about the restriction on leaving the camps.
Despite these warnings, many still leave for work, medical treatment, or fishing. After their arrests, the BGB handed them over to the Majhis for further management.
Lieutenant Colonel Ashikur Rahman, Commander of Teknaf Battalion-2 (BGB), emphasised that the unlawful movement of Rohingyas outside the camps is disrupting local law and order.
He noted an increase in criminal activities such as abductions, human trafficking, violence, and murder. To maintain safety and stability, BGB will continue conducting these operations.
Sources within BGB confirmed that regular search operations are underway in the Teknaf-Ukhiya area to prevent Rohingyas from leaving the camps illegally.
Following the arrests, the detainees are being verified before being handed back to the Majhis of their respective camps.
