A storm wreaked havoc across several regions of Nilphamari and Rangpur on early Sunday displacing over 500 families, injuring more than 30 people and causing extensive damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure.
In Nilphamari, the storm struck the Kishoreganj Upazila’s Gharagram Union leaving hundreds of homes destroyed and at least 30 people injured.
Five people were critically injured as houses collapsed, and over 25 others received basic treatment.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and the authorities are working to provide relief to the affected families, Kishoreganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pritam Saha confirmed.
Meanwhile, in Rangpur, a 45-minute storm caused widespread destruction in Nohali Union of Gangachara Upazila. The storm destroyed the homes of over 500 families, particularly in the villages of Kaim Nohali, Char Nohali, Purba Kochua, Sardarpara, Minar Bazar, and Char Bagdohara.
The storm also brought heavy rain, further worsening the situation for locals. Trees were uprooted, blocking roads and further hindering rescue efforts.
The entire union has been without electricity since the storm, and communication lines have been severed, causing a major disruption.
Nohali Union Parishad Chairman Ashraf Ali confirmed said that roads remain blocked and communication lines down, intensifying the suffering of the community.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmudul Hasan Mridha stated that local government officials, including the Union Parishad Chairman and members, quickly mobilised to assist the affected areas.
He also informed that rescue operations are underway, with a list of affected families being compiled.
The district administration has been notified, and relief efforts will include dry food, corrugated iron sheets for roofing, and cash assistance to those in need. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported from the storm.
