The hill student alliance under banner of “Jumma Chhatra Janata” has withdrawn its blockade in Khagrachhari following assurances from the administration to meet its eight-point demands.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page on Saturday morning, the group announced the suspension of the programme. It said the blockade was lifted after the administration pledged to address their demands within a set timeframe. The decision came after a second round of talks with the local authorities, according to the statement.
Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Baten Mridha said normalcy was returning after the blockade was called off. “Vehicles are back on the roads, shops have reopened and people are engaged in shopping. Security measures remain in place to prevent any deterioration of law and order,” he added.
The agitation began after a 16-year-old girl was reportedly abducted and raped on 23 September. Jumma Chhatra Janata launched a wave of protests including marches, rallies and blockades to press for the arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators. The demonstrations later turned violent in Khagrachhari and Guimara, leaving three people dead in Guimara.
