BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that Bangladesh’s journey towards democracy is fully supported by the international community, especially by democratic nations.
He also reaffirmed that the upcoming national election will be held in February 2026, as previously planned.
Fakhrul made these remarks on Friday night after returning from the United States, where he accompanied Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Speaking to the media at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Fakhrul said, “Our message is clear, we are returning to democracy, and the election will be held in February as scheduled. As directed by our leader, Tarique Rahman, we are preparing for the election.”
He went on to emphasise that the global community, especially democratic nations, strongly supports Bangladesh’s path to democratic restoration. “The world is with us on this matter. The support, particularly from democratic nations, is complete and unwavering,” he added.
Fakhrul, who had arrived in Dhaka on an Emirates Airlines flight, was part of the delegation that traveled to the UN on 23 September. Following the completion of the UNGA, Chief Adviser Yunus returned to Bangladesh on 2 October, while Fakhrul stayed back to attend a party event before coming home.
Commenting on the success of the visit, Fakhrul said, “We fulfilled our duties at the UNGA, and I believe the trip was successful. For the first time, the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government invited several major political parties to demonstrate national unity. This was an important step, and it allowed Bangladesh’s voice to be heard on the global stage.”
In addition to the UNGA, Fakhrul highlighted the side meetings held in New York, which he believes were beneficial for Bangladesh’s democratic future. “These discussions were crucial for Bangladesh, and they were very positive for the country’s democracy,” he said.
When asked about his interactions with various representatives at the UNGA, Fakhrul confirmed that they had discussions with officials from multiple countries. “We had talks with everyone, and of course, we engaged with those who were part of our delegation. It’s only natural,” he explained.
The delegation also included several notable figures Humayun Kabir, adviser to the acting chairman of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, and Joint Convener Tasnim Jara.
Regarding an incident in which NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen faced harassment at New York’s airport, Fakhrul dismissed the issue, saying, “We do not consider these incidents significant. This is part of a culture created by the ruling Awami League.”
