The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced that the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Bangladesh Jatiya League are set to receive official registration as political parties, following a field-level review of their applications.
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that out of 143 parties that applied for registration, the commission conducted field-level verification on 22 parties.
Following the review, two parties NCP and Bangladesh Jatiya League are being cleared for registration.
However, the NCP’s application faces a complication regarding its proposed electoral symbol.
“The symbol they requested is not listed in the schedule of approved symbols under the electoral rules. We will issue them a notice, and if they propose a new symbol, we will proceed with a fresh notification accordingly,” said the EC Secretary.
In contrast, Bangladesh Jatiya League’s registration and symbol selection have no such issues, and the process is expected to move forward smoothly.
Regarding Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed added that there is a court verdict in its favour, making it eligible for registration as well.
The commission is currently reviewing 12 other political parties for possible registration. Among those, three parties Bangladesh A-Am Janata Party (BAJP), Jatiya Janata Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD – Shahjahan Siraj faction), are under active EC observation.
He further stated that the functionality of nine political parties will undergo further investigation to assess their eligibility for registration.
The parties are Amjanatar Dal, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Party (BGP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), Bangladesh Justice and Development Party, Bhashani Janashakti Party, Bangladesh Bekar Mukti Parishad, Janatar Dal, Moulik Bangla, Janata Party Bangladesh.
The EC has also decided to reject seven parties from the registration process based on the field investigation. These are Forward Party, Bangladesh Sangskarabadi Party (BRP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist – CPB-M), Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam, Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Bekar Samaj (BABES), Bangladesh Solution Party, Notun Bangladesh Party.
