The Bangladesh Football League got off to an eventful start on Saturday, with defending champions Mohammedan Sporting suffering a surprise defeat and Bashundhara Kings dropping points in a late comeback.
Mohammedan, aiming to defend their title, lost 2-0 to Fortis FC at Kings Arena. The black-and-white side struggled to break down the lower-ranked visitors in the first half, before Gambian striker Pa Omar struck twice in the 61st and 79th minutes, securing a memorable win for Fortis and leaving Mohammedan to reflect on a disappointing start.
Elsewhere at Gazipur’s Shaheed Barkat Stadium, Bashundhara Kings initially looked dominant against newcomers PWD Sports. Dorielton Gomez Nasimento opened the scoring in the 13th minute from a precise pass by Faisal Ahmed Fahim. Fahim then doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time with a brilliant solo effort, dribbling past a defender and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Anik Ahmed.
The second half, however, belonged to PWD. In the 68th minute, they were awarded a penalty after Sohel Rana fouled Sohanur Rahman in the box, and Akobir Turayev converted the spot-kick. Four minutes later, Faisal Ahmed Akash equalised with a clinical finish from a cross by Minhajul Abedin Swadhin. The match ended 2-2, as PWD held firm against the five-time league champions, delighting their supporters.
In another fixture, Bangladesh Police began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Brothers Union at Munshiganj’s Bir Shreshtha Flight Lt Matiur Rahman Stadium, thanks to a solitary strike from Paulo Enrik.
