Kabirul Haque Mukti, former Member of Parliament for Narail-1 constituency from Awami League, has been arrested from the Niketan area in the capital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station stated that he was arrested from a car showroom in Niketan on Wednesday evening.
There are multiple cases against Mukti in Narail and Dhaka, related to incidents during the anti-discrimination movement. However, the police did not cite any specific case as the reason for the arrest.
After being elected as an MP as an independent candidate in 2008, Kabirul Haque Mukti was re-elected as an MP with the Awami League’s nomination in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections.
In August 2024, Nausher Ali Biswas, joint convener of Naragati Thana BNP, filed a case against him under the Explosive Substances Act at Naragati Police Station.
The First Information Report (FIR) of the case states that former MP BM Kabirul Haque and other accused illegally assembled in the Bagudanga area of Kalia upazila on the evening of 15 August with various local weapons, shotguns, firearms, and hand bombs.
The FIR further alleges that the accused attempted to loot the property of local people and created fear and terror in the public mind, alongside causing disorder in a procession of BNP leaders and activists who were opposing the Awami League government.
They even threatened to kill and injure many. They created panic among the people by exploding hand bombs and firing shots from shotguns and firearms. Due to fear, BNP leaders and activists left the area and took shelter in surrounding villages.
