First-year students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have reportedly been subjected to ragging by senior students. On Sunday, the very first day of the freshers’ reception program, students of the International Relations Department were allegedly mentally harassed under the guise of an “introduction session” inside a classroom.
The victims belong to the university’s 54th batch. According to allegations, around 18–20 students from the 53rd batch and several from the 52nd batch were involved in the incident. They confined the first-year students in a classroom for two and a half hours, using abusive language and creating psychological pressure.
Victims stated that after the official freshers’ reception, the seniors called them into a room. The seniors allegedly threatened and intimidated the newcomers in the name of teaching them manners. Two female students broke down in tears, while the male students became visibly distressed and frightened.
It was further discovered that among the accused, some of them are involved in the politics of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing).
One victim added, “When a teacher entered the room, they left temporarily, but resumed their intimidation once the teacher left. We were warned not to share this incident with anyone.”
The fresher also reported that the accused openly claimed such practices are part of the university’s culture and that no action would be taken against them.
In response, Tanvir Hossain, class representative of the 53rd batch, denied the allegations, saying, “Nothing of this sort happened. Everything has already been resolved. There is nothing to exaggerate or downplay.”
Professor Sajib Bala, Chairman of the International Relations Department, stated, “We have not yet received any written complaints, but we have heard oral allegations. We are trying to resolve the matter. If written complaints are submitted, actions will be taken according to the university’s rules.
