The 134th CEAT Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship has begun at the historic Royal Colombo Golf Club, running from 23 to 28 September 2025. Among the international field, Bangladesh has sent two of its finest amateur golfers, Md Abu Bakar Siddique and Shafiqul Islam, to compete on one of South Asia’s most prestigious stages.
This year’s edition is following a packed schedule that will test the skill and endurance of every participant. The men’s division begins with qualifying rounds on 23 and 24 September, from which the 32 lowest aggregate gross scores will move into the match play stage. The knockout format then takes over, starting with the round of 32 on 25 September, followed by the round of 16 and quarter-finals on 26 September. The semi-finals are set for 27 September before the grand 36-hole final on 28 September brings the curtain down.
The women’s competition opens with qualifying rounds on 24 and 25 September, with only the top eight gross scores advancing to match play. The quarter-finals will be staged on 26 September, the semi-finals on 27 September, and the final, also a 36-hole contest, on 28 September. Additionally, the F B De Mel Cup is being contested in the women’s section, with the top four nett scorers selected from the lowest eight gross scores.
Bangladesh’s campaign is being guided by Brigadier General (Retired) Md Sayeed Siddiki, the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Golf Federation, who has travelled with the team as manager. His presence brings both administrative experience and encouragement to the two golfers flying the red and green flag in Colombo.
For Abu Bakar Siddique and Shafiqul Islam, the championship is a chance to measure their game against the region’s best. With a course steeped in tradition and a demanding match play format awaiting them, the Bangladeshi pair will need consistency and composure to make a mark.
