Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s Guyana Amazon Warriors were eliminated from the Caribbean Premier League after Jamaica Kingsmen sealed a thrilling five wicket win in Qualifier 2.
Chasing 207 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Jamaica reached 207 for 5 in 19.4 overs. Rovman Powell played a key role late in the chase with an unbeaten 40 from only 17 balls.
Jamaica made a flying start through Maaz Sadaqat. Miraz came into the attack in the second over, but Sadaqat went after him straight away. He hit the Bangladesh all rounder for two sixes and a four in an 18 run over.
Sadaqat raced to 41 from 17 balls before Dwaine Pretorius dismissed him. Miraz recovered well after his expensive first over. He kept things tighter in his next two overs as Guyana tried to slow Jamaica down.
Kirk McKenzie also kept the chase moving with 34 from 20 balls before Imran Tahir dismissed him. Keacy Carty then took charge in the middle overs. He reached his fifty from 35 balls and gave Jamaica a strong base for the chase.
Miraz returned for his final over in the 12th. Saim Ayub hit him for two sixes as Jamaica continued to stay close to the required rate.
Miraz finished without a wicket and gave away 43 runs from his four overs. Pretorius later removed Ayub for 23 from 17 balls. Carty also departed after scoring 56 from 40 balls.
Jamaica still needed 34 runs from the final three overs, but Powell changed the game. Powell and Andre Russell took 15 runs from Tahir’s over. Powell then struck another four and six in the following over to bring Jamaica closer.
Six runs were needed from the final over. Romario Shepherd removed Russell to give Guyana some hope. But Jamaica held their nerve and completed the chase with two balls remaining.
Powell remained unbeaten on 40 from 17 balls with two fours and four sixes. He was named player of the match. Pretorius finished with two wickets for 37 runs for Guyana.
Earlier, Guyana posted 206 for 4 after being asked to bat first. They lost both openers with only 20 runs on the board. Mohammad Haris and Mavendra Dindyal both scored nine.
Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope then brought Guyana back into the game with a 96 run partnership. Hope scored 40 from 33 balls before Hunain Shah dismissed him.
Hetmyer continued to attack the Jamaica bowlers. He reached his fifty from only 20 balls and kept finding the boundary.
Quentin Sampson also played a quick innings of 29 from 17 balls. Hetmyer reached his century from the final ball of the innings. He finished unbeaten on 102 from 45 balls, hitting four fours and eight sixes.
Shepherd remained unbeaten on 10, while Miraz did not need to bat. Guyana finished on 206 for 4, but the total was not enough as Jamaica completed a thrilling chase to end Miraz and his team’s CPL campaign.
