Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested six leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, whose activities have been banned, in separate raids across the capital over the last 24 hours.
Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of DMP, Mohammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the matter on Monday.
The arrested individuals are Md Kamal Hossain, 48, executive member of Uzirpur Upazila Awami League and a close associate of senior party leader Abul Hasnat Abdullah; Md Monir Hossain, 46, Jubo League activist from Ward 53, Kadamtali; Md Jamal Hossain, 40, Awami League activist; Md Roni, 35, former assistant secretary of Dhaka South Chhatra League; Abdul Wadud Pintu, 64, former chairman of Noakhali Zila Parishad and president of Noakhali Municipal Awami League; Mohammad Habibur Rahman Gazi, 62, former chairman of Gazipur Union No.1 and former president of Haimchar Thana Union Parishad.
According to the DB, the arrests were made in coordinated operations on Sunday (September 21) night.
Among the arrest, Kamal was arrested from the Bailey Road area by a team from DB Cyber Division at 10pm, Monir was detained from Jurain at 10.30pm; while Pintu was arrested from Dhanmondi 10/A by DB Wari Division at 11.30pm and Jamal Hossain was arrested from the D Block area of Banasree by DB Cyber South Division at 1.30am on Monday.
The arrested individuals are accused of organising, financing, and mobilising people for flash processions across Dhaka under the banner of the Awami League. Legal proceedings against them are currently underway, confirmed DC Talebur Rahman.
