The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested nine members of Awami League-affiliated organisations, including a former MP of Bagerhat, as part of raids carried out over the past 24 hours in different parts of the capital.
According to a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Taibur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the arrests were made during operations carried out on Monday and Tuesday.
Apart from Amirul Alam Milon (70), member of Awami League’s central committee and former MP of Bagerhat-4 constituency, those arrested were: Kazi Sarwar Jahan Mithu (42), joint secretary of Pallabi Thana Jubo League; Shafiqul Islam Dilu (72), former commissioner of Ward No 63 in Jatrabari; Mohammad Taj Uddin (35), joint secretary of Shah Ali Thana Awami League; Ismail Hossain (48), general secretary of Ramna Thana Sramik League; Mokhlesur Rahman (72), joint secretary of Sadar Upazila Awami League in Chapainawabganj; Emran Goldar (45), publicity secretary of Bongshal Thana Awami League; Mohammad Tanvir Ahmed Antu (35), former president of Ward No 62 of the (now banned) Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL); and Aritro Nandi (27), joint general secretary of BCL’s Jagannath Hall unit at Dhaka University.
According to the police, those taken into custody have cases filed against them at various police stations.
The police also claim that those arrested were responsible for sowing panic and chaos amongst the public by disrupting law and order and carrying out surprise processions on the streets.
