Vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election is underway and likely to be completed by 4pm on Friday, according to Election Commission member Dr Khandaker Lutfur Elahi.
Speaking to the media at the university’s Senate Building around 3:30am on Friday, Dr Elahi stated, “Vote counting has been completed for three residential halls so far. The process has continued throughout the night. To expedite the count, the commission is considering bringing in experienced personnel in the morning.”
Prof Lutfur informed journalists that only hall union vote counting was underway at that time. “It seems unlikely that counting for the central union ballots will begin before Jumma prayers,” he said. “Considering the pace, the final results may not be announced until later in the afternoon.”
Counting, which began at approximately 10:15pm on Thursday, is being conducted manually, with results displayed on LED screens. As of 8:30am on Friday, the Election Commission confirmed that vote counting had been completed in 12 of the 21 residential halls at Jahangirnagar University.
Sources from the Election Commission stated that counting for the remaining nine halls is still ongoing. Once counting in all halls is completed, the commission will begin tallying the ballots for the Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) positions.
An Election Commission member reported that vote counting is being carried out simultaneously at two tables. However, counting was briefly suspended in some halls during the early hours due to the absence of candidate agents. In halls where agents were present, the process continued without interruption.
Voting for both the central JUCSU and hall council bodies commenced at 9am on Thursday across the university’s 21 residential halls, which served as polling centres. A total of 11,897 students were eligible to vote, including 6,115 male and 5,728 female students. Although voting was scheduled to conclude at 5pm, it continued until approximately 7:30pm at Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
