Nepal’s Gen-Z protest movement has nominated former chief justice Sushila Karki as the country’s interim prime minister, as confirmed by the secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association in a statement on Wednesday.
The decision followed a nearly four-hour-long virtual meeting, where it was agreed that no youth affiliated with political parties should be involved in leadership discussions. Karki, who is unaffiliated with any political party, was selected for her impartiality and credibility. She is the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal and remains the only woman to have held that position.
The proposal emerged after anti-corruption protests, driven by Gen Z, escalated into violence following the announcement of a social media ban. At least 22 people lost their lives as protesters clashed with security forces, and the demonstrations resulted in widespread destruction, including fires at Parliament House, the President’s Office, the Prime Minister’s residence, party headquarters, and the homes of senior political leaders.
