Ganesh Chandra Roy, the president of Dhaka University (DU) Chhatra Dal, publicly reprimanded Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan during a heated exchange at the university on Tuesday.
Roy, visibly agitated, slammed the table and told the vice chancellor, “Today, female students came from outside, and the buses were fewer. Don’t you understand, this is a DUCSU election?”
Central Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir intervened to calm the situation, while the vice chancellor responded by telling Roy, “Please sit down quietly.”
The incident took place during a press briefing after Chhatra Dal leaders, including Rakibul Islam and Nasir Uddin Nasir, met with the Vice Chancellor to discuss election-related matters.
During the meeting, Roy expressed strong criticism of the Vice Chancellor and voiced his frustrations about various issues.
Present at the meeting were DU faculty members, including former Physics Professor AFM Yusuf Haider, Mohammad Lutfar Rahman, pro vice chancellor of the National University, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan.
This year’s DUCSU and Hall Union elections are the first in six years. Voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm, with each voter casting their vote on a six-page ballot sheet with 41 choices. Results are being counted at eight centers using 14 counting machines, with the final results to be announced at Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building, displayed on an LED screen.
A total of 471 candidates, including 62 women, are competing for 28 DUCSU positions, while 1,035 candidates are running for 13 posts in 18 dorms. The total number of voters was 39,775, with 20,873 male and 18,902 female students.
For security reasons, voters were not allowed to bring mobile phones, smartwatches, bags, liquids, or any electronic devices into the polling stations.
