Additionally, the Dhaka-Khulna highway was closed after tree trunks were placed on the highway in the Mansurabad area of Algi Union, blocking the road. This left several hundred vehicles stranded on the highway, causing significant distress to passengers.
Locals have blocked the highways by placing tree trunks in at least five locations along these two highways.
Due to the blockade of these two highways, communication between the capital and 21 districts of the southern region has been severed.
Protesting residents of the area had blocked the highways twice last Friday, demanding the cancellation of the gazette on constituency delineation issued by the Bangladesh Election Commission.
After a three-day ultimatum based on assurances from the upazila administration, they blocked the highways again.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station Md Rokibuzzaman stated that efforts are being made by the upazila administration and highway police to negotiate with the locals.
