In Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali, a 60-year-old man, Shamsu Alam, was hacked to death over a land dispute in Matarbari.
The incident occurred on Monday, shortly before the Isha prayers, in South Rajghat of Matarbari. Shamsu Alam was the son of the late Ahmad Mia of the village. The attack was reportedly led by the secretary of the South Branch of Ward No 3 of Ishak Union.
Locals said Shamsu Alam had been involved in a long-standing property dispute with his paternal cousin Ishak. On the night of the incident, some assailants lying in wait attacked Shamsu Alam on his way home, inflicting severe injuries. He was taken to the local Matarbari General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Matarbari police outpost Sumitra Barua said the killing appears to be linked to a land dispute. Police have inspected the crime scene and are conducting operations in various areas to apprehend the culprits.
