Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has stated that an additional 4,000 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) will be added to the police force through new appointments and promotions before the election. He mentioned that half of the new ASIs will be recruited directly, while the remaining half will be filled through promotions.
The IGP informed journalists of this after a meeting with Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Md Mokhlesur Rahman, at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The senior secretary said, “A delegation from the police came. After a couple of amendments to the police regulations, a large-scale recruitment process is underway. We held a meeting to ensure that the recruitment is done quickly. If we can issue the order today, the ongoing recruitments, including that of ASIs, will be expedited.”
The IGP said, “Four thousand ASIs will be appointed. Half of them will be through promotions, and the other half through direct recruitment. We came to the Ministry of Public Administration today regarding this matter. They are making the necessary amendments to the rules, which has made our recruitment process a slightly smoother.”
When asked if these appointments are being made in view of the upcoming election, he replied, “As you know, the chief adviser recently agreed in principle to the recruitment for several forces. We are currently working those out.”
Mokhlesur Rahman also said, “We have created these posts (including the posts for ASIs) through the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Administration, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Legislative Division. Now, regarding appointments to these posts, there were some regulations, which have been amended in certain areas.”
“The first force present in the election field will bethe police,” he added. “Ansar will also be there.”
The Public Administration secretary further stated, “Recruitment is ongoing in the police, as is training. Police superintendents are also currently recruiting constables and those at slightly higher levels. We have accelerated the process so that the police force can be prepared before the election schedule is announced.”
