BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the deposed fascists of spreading rumors to create confusion among the public.
Emphasising that people should not listen to any rumors, Fakhrul said, “Many rumors are being circulated. We will not listen to them, and we should not. The Awami League is spreading these rumors through social media to create division among us.
“But there is no division among us. There is unity, and with that unity, we will move forward and, Insha’Allah, we will win.”
Fakhrul made these comments while inaugurating a cleanliness drive at a canal in the city’s Uttara area on Tuesday afternoon. The campaign was organised by the Uttoranchal Chhatra Forum of BNP, and similar initiatives were also held in the morning at Manik Nagar by the South BNP wing.
In his speech, Fakhrul explained that while a rally was originally planned, it was reconsidered to avoid traffic congestion and public discomfort.
“Our leader Tarique Rahman suggested that we pick two canals – one in each region of Dhaka – to clean, ensuring that the city’s residents are not inconvenienced. This way, we could carry out our programme with minimal disruption,” Fakhrul explained.
He also urged the leaders to take the initiative seriously, saying, “I request the leaders not to just show up for five minutes, clean briefly, and leave. We need to ensure that these canals are truly cleaned, and it should be clear that it is our leaders and workers who have done this.”
Fakhrul further remarked, “Leaders should not come in suits and ties. Who can clean a canal in a suit? No one. Everyone, including leaders, should wear casual clothes like pajamas or shorts and participate in the cleanliness drive.”
Addressing the women leaders, he noted, “Some women leaders are arriving from beauty parlors looking well-groomed. This event is about walking among the people, not about appearances.
“We need to go door-to-door, talk to the people, and spread the message of BNP, including the legacies of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia, and Tarique Rahman.”
He also called on the leaders of BNP’s student and youth wings to take the lead in this movement, emphasizing the importance of avoiding any disturbances, particularly in upcoming student union elections at various universities.
“There should be no chaos, and we should avoid any negative perception of BNP,” he added.
Fakhrul further stated, “If any trouble arises in the neighborhoods, the responsibility falls on you [BNP activists] to resolve it. The police are here to help, but now we must ensure no one is allowed to engage in wrongdoing.
“Those who have been involved in wrongdoing in the past should turn over a new leaf, stay with the people, and serve them.”
After his speech, Mirza Fakhrul officially launched the cleanliness drive at the canal in Uttara. Among the other BNP leaders present were Dhaka Metropolitan North’s Convener Aminul Haque, Member Secretary Mustafa Zaman, and other local leaders.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy inaugurates cleanliness drive in Dhaka South
Meanwhile, at around 12pm on Tuesday, Gayeshwar Chandra Ray, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, inaugurated a week-long canal and drain cleaning campaign in Old Dhaka, organised by the South BNP.
Following the inauguration, Gayeshwar, along with party leaders and workers, actively participated in the cleaning activities.
Other BNP leaders, including Dhaka Metropolitan South’s Convener Rofiqul Alam Majnu, Member Secretary Tanveer Ahmed Robin, Joint Secretary Advocate Abdus Salam Azad, Executive Committee members Habibur Rashid Habib, JSS’ Zakir Hossain Rokon, Dhaka South leaders Liton Mahmud, Abdus Sattar, and Farhad Hossain, were also present.
