The death toll from the devastating explosion in Siddhirganj continues to climb, as a four-year-old child succumbed to her injuries on Thursday afternoon, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.
Earlier in the day, the child’s father passed away due to severe burn injuries. Two more victims remain in critical condition. Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the latest fatality.
He said the child, Jannat, had suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body, including damage to her respiratory tract. She died under treatment at around 1pm Previously, one-month-old Imam Uddin and his grandmother, Tahera Akhter, 55, died from injuries sustained in the same blast. Imam’s father, Hasan Gazi, 40, passed away early Thursday around 4:30am.
Doctors report that Hasan’s wife Salma,35, and sister-in-law Asma,32, remain in the ICU in critical condition, with both having sustained burns over 48 per cent of their bodies.
The incident, which occurred on August 23 in the Hirajhil residential area of Siddhirganj in Narayanganj Sadar upazila, initially injured nine members of two families, including women and children.
According to investigators, the explosion was triggered by a compressor blast after an electrical short circuit sparked a fire in the refrigerator. The blast caused extensive burns to the victims, several of whom were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
