The Supreme Court on Wednesday scrapped the proceedings of a corruption case involving Grameen Telecom against Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and six others, filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
An Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the defendants challenging a High Court verdict, reports UNB.
The case was filed on 30 May 2023 by then ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anowar, accusing 14 people of misappropriating Tk 25.22 crore from the Employees’ Welfare Fund of Grameen Telecom.
The ACC approved charge submission on 29 January last year, with charge sheets formally submitted to a Dhaka court on 1 February.
On 8 June, the court ordered the framing of charges and scheduled a hearing for 15 July.
On 8 July, Yunus and others petitioned the High Court to cancel the charge framing order, which was rejected on 24 July.
Later, they filed a leave-to-appeal with the Appellate Division, which accepted the petition on 21 October and sought a concise statement.
Meanwhile, on 11 August, the ACC submitted a plea to Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 seeking withdrawal of the case — just six days after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country amid a student-led mass uprising.
