A 25-year-old man was killed in a mob attack at an under-construction building in Demra of the capital on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 10am in the Shapla Chattar area, where the youth was allegedly caught attempting to steal from the site.
According to Demra Police, locals detained the man after spotting him at the construction site. The situation escalated when a crowd gathered and attacked the suspect. On information, police arrived at the scene and promptly rescued the man, rushing him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital but despite efforts to save him, the youth was pronounced dead around 1pm.
Sub-Inspector Kakon Mia of Demra Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect’s identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. The victim was described as wearing a black shirt and jeans. The police have sent the body to the hospital morgue for an autopsy as part of the investigation.
Authorities are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the lynching, and efforts are underway to identify the victim and determine whether the theft claims were accurate, he added.
