Unidentified miscreants set fire to an archway erected for the National Citizen Party (NCP) “July March” programme in Narayanganj’s College Road early Friday morning, just hours before the party’s scheduled rally.
The incident occurred at around 3:30am.
Local NCP leaders have accused members of the banned Chhatra League of being behind the attack.
Ahmedur Rahman Tonu, a central NCP leader, claimed that the perpetrators fled the scene when a night watchman intervened. He also stated that the party had promptly notified the police and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.
Tarek Al Mehdi, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations), confirmed that they are investigating the incident. “We are aware of the situation and are treating the matter with utmost seriousness,” he said.
The attack on the arch comes ahead of the NCP’s highly anticipated “July March,” which is scheduled to begin later in the day from the Nitaiganj area of Narayanganj.
NCP leaders and supporters are expected to arrive in the city to participate in the rally, which has drawn considerable attention.
Authorities have yet to confirm any arrests or leads in connection with the arson.
