The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered three former police officials to appear before it on 15 April in connection with a case of alleged crimes against humanity stemming from the killing of six youths and the burning of their bodies during student protests in Savar’s Ashulia area in July–August 2023.

According to a report by state news agency BSS, the accused are former Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Dhaka Md Abdullahil Kafi, Shahidul Islam, and former Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Arafat Hossain.

The order was issued by the tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, following a petition by the prosecution.

Prosecutors stated that on 5 August 2023, during the height of the student protests, police shot and killed six young men in Ashulia.

In an attempt to cover up the incident, the bodies were allegedly set on fire. One of the youths was reportedly still alive when petrol was poured over him and he was burned to death.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and is being treated as a serious violation of human rights. The tribunal is set to hear testimonies and examine evidence on the scheduled date.
