Condemning the attack on NCP’s scheduled “March to Gopalganj” programme, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday urged the government to take stern action against those responsible.

The BNP leader in a statement expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it a ‘heinous act’ carried out by the terrorists of the fascist Awami League.

“Following the fall of the autocratic Awami regime through the student-led mass movement, some miscreants are once again trying to destabilise the country for their own gain,” the BNP leader said.

“The barbaric attack on NCP’s programme in Gopalganj – cocktail explosions, arson attack on the vehicles of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and police, and injuring the law enforcers – reflects these evil efforts,” he said.

Due to the serious deterioration in law and order, Fakhrul said Awami League’s cohorts are now raising their heads and becoming aggressive in an attempt to exploit the situation by creating chaos in the country and putting the interim government in trouble.

“There is no alternative but to deal with these miscreants with a strong hand,” he said.

Fakhrul also called upon people of all classes and professions, regardless of party or opinion, to remain united to protect democracy, voting rights, the lives and property of the people, and to prevent the rise of fascism again.

Otherwise, he warned, the country will once again face a threat to its independence and sovereignty.

The BNP Secretary General demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on the NCP programme. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured police personnel.
