Disney’s Zootopia 3 will expand the animated franchise with the introduction of birds and a possible journey beyond Zootopia City, offering a wider look at its animal world.
According to Collider, Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush discussed the sequel with Steve Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. He said Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde would remain at the heart of the story, adding that the film could mark the franchise’s first trip beyond the city. Bush said he and director Byron Howard had discussed introducing birds and reptiles as far back as the first film, around 15 years ago.
Bush confirmed that the studio has started developing the third film but said its release year remains flexible. Disney’s schedule depends on how the project and surrounding releases perform. The studio plans roughly 10 years ahead, with its first five films mapped out in greater detail. As animated films take four to six years to make, the remaining five require broader planning.
Bush said clear scheduling also helps artists decide which projects they want to join. Zootopia 3 has no confirmed release date.
