Tamil cinema star Dhanush has fuelled speculation about a possible political career through the expansion of his fan organisation and a series of welfare initiatives. However, the actor has yet to make any official announcement about entering politics.

According to The New Indian Express, Dhanush met hundreds of women supporters at a private college on the outskirts of Chennai on October 25. He presented them with silver lamps bearing a lotus motif, triggering speculation about a possible association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Reports of an alleged meeting with party leaders during a recent visit to Delhi further intensified the rumours.

Congress leader Manickam Tagore accused the BJP of attempting to create political uncertainty by drawing a film star into the political arena. He claimed the party had explored several options, including relying on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, encouraging K Annamalai to launch a separate party and bringing an actor into politics.

Some AIADMK leaders have also invited Dhanush to join their party under Palaniswami.

On October 14, Dhanush renamed his fan club the Dhanush Welfare Movement, prompting reports that he might be preparing to launch a political outfit with a new flag and logo.

However, director and movement leader Subramaniam Siva said the organisation had been using its flag for more than a decade. It features a red star within a red-and-white border, alongside Dhanush’s image and the Tamil phrase ‘Ennampol Than Vaazhkai’, meaning ‘Your life reflects your thoughts’.

The movement reportedly plans to open free, air-conditioned tuition centres for school students across all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. Each centre will have three qualified teachers and an assistant, with the organisation paying their salaries. The centres are expected to start operating by January 2027.

It also intends to recruit 3,000 legal advisers across the state to support its members and members of the public.

Dhanush had earlier encouraged his supporters to take a more active role in society. Addressing a gathering in Tiruvallur district on July 27, he urged them to look beyond attending film premieres and audio launches. “If we unite, we can do something amazing,” he told them.

A fan said Dhanush had been meeting supporters since 2025 and appeared interested in building a stronger grassroots network. The supporter also claimed that many of the actor’s fans voted for actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay in the April 2026 Assembly elections. The fragmented nature of Dhanush’s fan base could explain his efforts to bring them together, the fan suggested.

Meanwhile, some supporters have shared photographs on X showing the actor taking part in welfare activities in previous years. They argue that his recent initiatives represent a continuation of his longstanding social work rather than a sudden shift towards politics.

While speculation continues, Dhanush remains occupied with his film career.

Rajkumar Periasamy, director of the actor’s upcoming film ‘OM’, said he had no knowledge of Dhanush’s political ambitions and described him as deeply committed to cinema.

“This is his 55th film. We’ve already done the pooja for D56 (his 56th movie). He is working on other language films too. I don’t know anything about him entering politics. Like you, I would love to ask him this question,” Rajkumar said.

‘OM’ is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on November 20, 2026.

Dhanush made his acting debut with ‘Thulluvadho Ilamai’ in 2002 and went on to earn acclaim for films such as ‘Aadukalam’ (2010) and ‘Asuran’ (2019). He also explored political themes in ‘Kodi’ (2016), playing twin brothers on opposite sides of politics.

For now, the actor’s political future remains unclear. Despite growing speculation around his welfare organisation and public engagements, Dhanush has not confirmed any plans to enter electoral politics.
