Netflix is bringing one of the world’s most popular battle royale video games to television, with Donald Glover taking on multiple roles in a live-action adaptation of ‘PUBG’.
According to Collider, Glover will write, direct, executive produce and star in the upcoming series based on the popular game developed by South Korean company Krafton. His brother, Stephen Glover, will also join the project as a writer and executive producer.
The series will additionally have Michael Schaefer of Neon TV, Fam Udeorji of Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee of Krafton’s entertainment division, LV3H, as executive producers.
First released in 2017 as ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’, PUBG helped popularise the battle royale genre. The multiplayer game drops players onto a map where they collect weapons and supplies before fighting to become the last person or team standing.
The franchise has since grown into a global gaming phenomenon and earned seven Guinness World Records. Krafton announced plans to expand PUBG into film and television in 2020, with its entertainment division now overseeing the development of screen projects.
Donald and Stephen Glover have worked together on several projects, most notably the acclaimed television series ‘Atlanta’.
Donald created and starred in the show, while both brothers served as writers and executive producers. Donald also directed several episodes and won Emmy Awards for his work on the series.
The new adaptation joins Netflix’s expanding collection of video game-based productions. The streaming platform is also developing a live-action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series and a ‘Gears of War’ film, alongside animated projects based on ‘Minecraft’, ‘Magic: The Gathering’ and ‘Clash of Clans’.
The makers have not revealed the series’ storyline, additional cast members, production schedule or release date. The project remains in development.
