Police have arrested two extortionists along with an illegal firearm and ammunition after chasing them down as they attempted to breach a police checkpoint in the capital’s Mirpur area on Saturday.
The arrestees are Moshiul Azam Orin and Shanto Islam.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Mirpur Division Hassan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar confirmed the matter on Saturday night.
According to police, a team was conducting a security checkpoint operation near Mirpur-11 Metro Station on Saturday afternoon.
Around 4:55pm, police signalled two suspicious men riding a motorcycle to stop. The riders defied the signal and attempted to flee, but police chased and apprehended them.

The motorcycle used in the incident was also seized.
DC Hassan said that Moshiul had previously been arrested in an arms case by the Detective Branch (DB) of Mirpur Division on 28 May 2025.
After securing bail, he returned to criminal activities and resumed extortion using illegal firearms.
Police disclosed that Orin faces nine cases, including charges of robbery, registered with Mirpur Model Police Station, Pallabi Police Station, and police stations in other districts.
The other arrestee, Shanto Islam, faces three cases involving robbery across Mirpur Model Police Station, Pallabi Police Station, and other districts.
