Weighing a staggering 16.514kg – more than five times the previous world record – a giant handcrafted pair of 22-carat gold earrings created by Joyalukkas Jewellery has earned two Guinness World Records titles in Dubai.
The monumental piece, named Mayura Sahasra (“A Thousand Peacocks”), has been officially certified as both the world’s heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings.
The record-breaking 16.514kg jhumkas measure 1.215 metres in length and 0.682 metres in diameter. To construct the massive gold creation, 55 master artisans devoted 5,840 hours of painstaking work over several months.
The 16 kg-plus gold masterpiece was officially unveiled on 24 October at the Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas, located in the Dubai Gold District.
The ceremony was led by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, alongside Joy Alukkas, chairman of Joyalukkas Group, and John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery, reports Gulf News.
An official Guinness World Records adjudicator presented certificates for both records to Marri, Joy, and John Paul.
The gathering was attended by distinguished industry figures and dignitaries, including Laila Mohd Suhail, member of Dubai Golden Jewellery Group and chair of its marketing committee; Rashid Alharmoodi, senior director of commercial at Dubai Gold District; and Levy Pezulu, senior policy lead at the World Gold Council.
Drawing structural design cues from the traditional bell-shaped jhumka common to South Asian bridal ornaments, the creation pays visual homage to the peacock, a cultural symbol of grace, pride, and beauty in Indian heritage.
Its title stems from a legend of a divine peacock shedding a thousand feathers that carry prayers, wishes, or dreams, with the detailed goldsmithing reflecting the bird’s plumage.
Joy said the creation serves as a tribute to Dubai’s growth alongside the firm over nearly four decades as the “city of gold” and to the artisans who turned an ambitious idea into gold.
He highlighted that securing two Guinness World Records titles with a single creation marks a proud moment for their family, workforce across 13 countries, and global customer base.
John Paul noted that the project was inspired by the group’s 40-year presence in the UAE and its experience observing Dubai’s record-breaking development.
He added that as Dubai is renowned as the “city of gold”, the 16 kg gold piece complements the emirate’s achievements, coinciding with the launch of the Jewel of Joy, described as the largest jewellery showroom in the Middle East.
