Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport resumed operations on Sunday after a two-week closure caused by Houthi attacks on the Saudi capital, although the Iran-backed group warned that further strikes could follow.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar showed an aircraft departing Riyadh early Sunday for the Saudi city of Jeddah, AFP reports.

Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which it supports, have faced a surge in Houthi attacks in recent weeks after a years-long truce collapsed during the summer.

The conflict has intensified the broader regional tensions involving the United States and Iran and worsened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.

In a post on X on Saturday, King Khalid International Airport said Terminal 1 would handle domestic flights, while Terminal 2 would serve international flights operated by Saudi carriers from Sunday.

The Houthis have launched a series of attacks on Riyadh airport, including a strike earlier this month that killed 13 people and injured more than 300, marking the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the airport remained “unsafe” and described it as a military target.

He warned international, regional and local airlines, as well as airport staff and travellers, against using the airport, saying it remained a target for Houthi forces.

Early Sunday, the Saudi-led military coalition said it had intercepted and shot down two drones over the Riyadh area.
