Gandhi had landed at Lucknow airport earlier in the day before his convoy set off for Sultanpur, about 135km away. The accident occurred when the convoy was around 35km from its destination.

In Sultanpur, Gandhi was scheduled to appear before a special MP-MLA court in connection with a defamation case over his alleged objectionable remarks about Amit Shah, who was the BJP chief at the time.

The court was expected to deliver its verdict on Monday, requiring the Congress MP to be physically present for the pronouncement of the judgment.

The case dates back to 4 August 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, filed a complaint against Gandhi over his alleged remarks about Shah.

Gandhi allegedly made the remarks at a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
