A group of armed assailants reportedly attacked a business establishment at Pallabi in the capital on Friday afternoon as business owners refused to pay Tk 5 crore as extortion money.

The incident took place at around 5pm at AK Builders, a housing construction company in the Alubdirtek area of Pallabi.

Officials of the company said that a group of armed assailants attacked their premises after the company refused to pay a Tk 5 crore ransom.

During the attack, the miscreants fired four gunshots, injuring an employee named Shariful Islam, who was admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital.

Amimul Ehsan, son of AK Builders Chairman Md Qayum Ali Khan, stated that three weeks ago, an individual named Jamil demanded Tk 5 crore from his father.

As the demand was not fulfilled, the miscreants had attacked the company in two phases and had stolen different items, including CCTV cameras.

He said that, on Friday, a group of 30–40 attackers stormed the establishment, fired gunshots in which an employee of the company was injured.

Officer-in-Charge of Pallabi Police Station Shafiul Islam on Saturday afternoon said no case has been filed yet, and no one has been held in connection with the incident. Efforts are underway to investigate the incident seriously and to arrest the people involved.

However, a police source said that AK Builders Chairman Qayum Ali Khan filed a general diary (GD) with the Pallabi Police Station on Thursday regarding the extortion demand and attack, alleging that his business establishment was attacked for the first time on June 27, followed by another attack on July 4.

They are intimidating and threatening to kill him, the chairman alleged, with the Friday attack marking the third assault on the company.
