Police have arrested three people in connection with the theft of gold ornaments from idols at the Ramna Kali Temple in Dhaka.
The arrests were made during a midnight raid on Saturday in the capital’s Uttarkhan area.
Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Operations) Khokon Mia confirmed the arrests on Sunday, saying the suspects had confessed during questioning to stealing gold ornaments from the temple idols.
The arrestees were identified as Lipi Karmakar, 29, her husband Arnab Roy, 29, and Md Suman, 35.
Police said investigators examined CCTV footage following the theft on 7 October and identified the suspects.
Acting on the findings, a joint team from Shahbagh Police Station and an intelligence agency raided a rented house in Uttarkhan’s Dhobadia area around midnight on Saturday and detained Lipi and her husband Arnab.
Based on information provided by the couple, police subsequently detained Suman from his shop on allegations of purchasing the stolen gold.
Khokon Mia said the three had been sent to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court with a petition seeking their remand for further questioning.
