Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) celebrated World Egg Day 2026 on Friday to raise public awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs, an affordable source of nutrition, energy and good health.

The day was observed through various programmes organised by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FVMAS) under the theme, “Nutrition in Eggs, Energy in Eggs, Freedom from Diseases in Eggs”.

The programme began at 10am with a colourful procession from the faculty premises, reads a press release.

Teachers and students marched through various roads on the university campus before concluding at 36th July Square. 

During the procession, participants displayed banners, placards and festoons highlighting the nutritional value of eggs and their importance in maintaining good health.

A discussion meeting on the significance of the day was later held at the university’s old auditorium.

GAU Vice-Chancellor GKM Mostafizur Rahman attended the programme as the chief guest. 

Md Aminul Islam, head of the Department of Dairy and Poultry Science, presented the keynote paper, while FVMAS Dean Professor Dr Md Taimur Islam chaired the meeting.

At the beginning of the programme, Assistant Professor Khairunnesa of the Department of Dairy and Poultry Science delivered the welcome address.

In his keynote presentation, Aminul Islam highlighted the history of eggs, their nutritional value and health benefits, as well as their diverse role in meeting people’s daily nutritional needs. He illustrated the discussion with relevant visuals.

Addressing the meeting, VC Mostafizur said agricultural science and research were closely linked to improving people’s quality of life.

He stressed the need for researchers to focus more on producing safer, more nutritious and healthier eggs and chicken meat. He also emphasised developing effective technologies suited to Bangladesh by learning from research and innovations in developed countries.

Eggs should not remain a food item accessible only to a particular section of society but should be included in everyone’s daily diet, he said, calling on all concerned to work towards this goal.

He also called for stronger coordination between production systems and research to ensure the easy availability of nutritious food.

Other speakers included Md Manjurul Islam, dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development; Mohammad Saiful Alam, university proctor; Md Morshedur Rahman of the Department of Dairy and Poultry Science; and Md Golam Haider of the Department of Pathobiology.

They highlighted the importance of ensuring nutrition security, raising public awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs, and promoting research and innovation in the poultry sector.

At one stage of the programme, the vice-chancellor handed over prizes to the winners of a flash poster presentation competition among students.

The programme formally concluded with the closing remarks of the chair.

World Egg Day was established by the International Egg Commission and first observed in Vienna, the capital of Austria, in 1996.

As part of the continuing observance, the 30th World Egg Day is being celebrated across Bangladesh through initiatives organised by the Department of Livestock Services, the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council and the Bangladesh branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association.
