Five members of a family, including a child, sustained severe burn injured in a gas cylinder explosion early Friday morning in the Kagojitola area of Old Dhaka’s Sutrapur police station.

The incident occurred around 1am, causing significant burn injuries to Ripon, 40, a van-puller, his wife Chandni, 35, and their sons Tamim, 18, and Rokon, 14; and daughter Ayesha, aged around one and half year.

They were later rescued and admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka around 3:30 am.

A neighbour, Zakir Hossain, who took them to the burn institute, said that the family had recently moved into the residence. He stated that the explosion took place unexpectedly while they were asleep, and the family members sustained severe burns.

Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the burn institute, Ripon suffered 60 percent burns while Rokon 60 per cent, Tamim 42 per cent, Chandni 45 per cent, and Ayesha 63 per cent.

He said all five victims are currently in critical condition in the High Defensive Unit (HDU) of the facility.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, a man and his wife died, while their minor daughter is fighting for life with 90 per cent burn in a suspected gas explosion at their residence in Jatrabari.
