Chhatra Dal activists caught two activists of the banned Chhatra League (BCL) in Badalgachhi, Naogaon, and handed them over to police after a torch procession.
The detainees are Imran Hossain, 21, of Hatatpara, and Arif Hossain, 23, of Jidhirpur village in Badalgachhi Sadar Union. Both are members of the Badalgachhi upazila unit of Chhatra League.
Police and locals said the BCL men brought out a procession near a bridge over the Chhota Jamuna River, close to Badalgachhi Police Station, on Friday night. A video of the procession, showing participants chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, later circulated on Facebook.
Chhatra Dal activists alleged the procession was aimed at destabilising the situation in the locality. They caught Imran and Arif around 8:30pm Sunday.
Mathurapur Union Chhatra Dal President Md Munsur Ali alleged that the two had joined the procession in support of the Awami League, uploaded a video of the event, and planned arson attacks in different areas.
Confirming the matter, Badalgachhi Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Nazrul Islam said the two were in custody and being interrogated. He added that legal action would follow in accordance with the law.
