Man in Kushtia held for rape of sister-in-law

Police have sent a 20-year-old man to jail for allegedly raping his sister-in-law after threatening to kill her 18-month-old child with a knife in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia. 

The accused, Naim Sheikh, was produced before court on Wednesday afternoon and subsequently remanded to jail. Meanwhile, the survivor was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for medical examination.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday night when the victim’s husband, who works on a trawler in the Padma River, was away for work. According to police, Naim, the younger brother of the victim’s husband, entered her room and forcibly raped her after threatening to slit her child’s throat.

On Tuesday, the victim’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. 

Police arrested Naim Sheikh, a resident of Kasba village in the Shilaidaha union, shortly after the complaint was lodged. He had recently appeared in the SSC exams from Khorshedpur Secondary School.

Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sulaiman Sheikh confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect and the victim are closely related, being brother and sister-in-law.

The victim’s uncle, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, said, “We brought my niece to the hospital for necessary tests. The accused threatened to slaughter her child if she resisted.”

The victim’s father, who filed the case, stated, “My daughter was raped by her brother-in-law. I want justice, which is why I went to the police.”
