Two alleged muggers have made confessional statements before separate courts in a case filed over the death of schoolteacher Ranjila Pervin, who was killed during a mugging near Parliament last month.
The two accused, Khokon and Razib, gave their statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before separate Dhaka metropolitan magistrates last night.
Khokon gave his statement before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin, while Razib recorded his statement before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan.
After recording their statements, the courts sent both accused back to jail.
Ranjila, head teacher of Baghbari Government Girls Primary School in Bogura’s Gabtoli upazila, had arrived in Dhaka early on 29 August with her husband, Abdul Matin.
The couple was travelling by rickshaw to Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital in Farmgate at dawn.
When the rickshaw reached the area in front of the South Plaza of the Parliament, a group of muggers riding a motorcycle allegedly snatched Ranjila’s bag.
She fell onto the road as a result of the incident and suffered critical injuries.
Ranjila was subsequently taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Her husband, Abdul Matin, later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the incident.
