Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle (C-Shift) officers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have intercepted five passengers arriving on the same flight and seized 24 litres of foreign liquor with an estimated market value of Tk4,80,000.
Acting on reliable secret information received by the director general on Friday regarding the illicit movement of import-prohibited goods on board, officers maintained special surveillance at key points across the airport.
Air India flight AI2183 from Mumbai landed at Shahjalal International Airport at approximately 10:56am. Following immigration formalities and baggage collection, the suspect passengers were searched one by one while crossing the Green Channel.
During the search, officers recovered six litres of liquor from Kasem, 12 litres from Md Mamun, three litres from Tapan, two litres from Faysal Miah, and one litre from Samsul Alam Palash.
The total consignment of 24 litres of foreign liquor was detained in accordance with customs regulations.
In view of repeated instances of liquor smuggling along the same route and flight, a special investigation team is currently probing whether an organised syndicate is behind the operation and exploiting passengers as carriers.
