A headteacher abducted by armed men in Bandarban’s Thanchi upazila was rescued on Thursday, about 24 hours after he went missing.
Chai Ang Prue Marma, the headmaster of Naidari Para Government Primary School in Balipara union of Thanchi upazila, Bandarban, was rescued from a jungle near Robert Para around noon, said police.
Thanchi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kanan Sarkar said six-member armed group abducted the teacher from a shop near the school around noon on Wednesday.
Following the abduction, troops of Border Guard Bangladesh’s (BGB) 38 Battalion, deployed in the Balipara zone, launched an operation to rescue him, according to BGB sources.
On Thursday, BGB personnel surrounded an area on suspicion that the abductors were hiding there. The armed men fled after sensing the presence of the security forces, leaving the teacher behind.
The BGB personnel then rescued Chai Aung Prue Marma from the jungle, the sources said.
The teacher returned home around 4pm on Thursday and was in good health, OC Kanan Sarkar said.
Police and the BGB were continuing efforts to identify those involved in the abduction and determine the motive, officials said.
