President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus of Thakurgaon University.
He placed the foundation stone at the designated site of the proposed university beside the Thakurgaon‑Pirganj road in Jamalpur area of Sadar upazila around 11am on Monday.
The president also expressed gratitude to the Almighty and thanked all involved in establishing the institution.
After the ceremony, he said all necessary steps for the university had been taken in a short time, and the remaining work would be completed as soon as possible. He noted that the project was advanced in response to the longstanding demand of the people of Thakurgaon.
He said the establishment of the university was a matter of great joy for the people of Thakurgaon, as it would expand higher education in the region, open new avenues for study and research, and create employment opportunities.
Emphasising the importance of maintaining academic standards, the president praised the role of the vice‑chancellor, saying he believed the VC, being from the area, would work well to advance the university.
President Fakhrul urged locals to treat the university as their own asset and take responsibility for its development and protection. He said the initiative was realized because of public demand, and therefore everyone must contribute to its progress and security.
He said it is now time to move forward through politics of compromise and democracy.
Speaking about development in Thakurgaon, the president said initial work on Thakurgaon Airport had already begun and expressed hope that Thakurgaon Medical College would also be built soon.
