Four people, including a mother and her son, were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Kaliakair-Mawna regional road in Gazipur on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Asadul, 18, son of Hashem Mia of Bongkhuri village in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, and his mother Nasima, 45.
The identities of the other two deceased could not be confirmed immediately.
According to police and local residents, the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was carrying four to five passengers from Kaliakair towards Mawna Chowrasta in neighbouring Sreepur upazila.
As it reached Kanchanpur Chairman Bari, the auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a covered van coming from the opposite direction around noon.
Five people, including the CNG driver, were seriously injured in the crash.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared two people dead. Two others later died while undergoing treatment.
Khandakar Moniruzzaman, investigation officer of Kaliakair Police Station, told TIMES that the identities of two of the deceased had been confirmed and police were working to identify the others.
However, Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidul Islam said legal proceedings are underway.
