Harry Styles gave fans an unexpected nod to his famous ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift during the opening night of his Madison Square Garden residency, joking about the venue’s recent role as the site of Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce.
According to Variety, Styles performed at the New York arena on Wednesday, 26 August, launching a 30-show residency as part of his Together, Together tour.
Near the end of the concert, he made a playful reference to the fact that Madison Square Garden had recently hosted Swift and Kelce’s wedding.
Swift and Kelce married at the venue on 3 July, transforming the iconic arena into an elaborate garden for their ceremony.
The star-studded celebration reportedly drew around 1,000 guests.
Styles and Swift dated briefly between late 2012 and early 2013, but the former couple have remained a frequent subject of pop-culture interest over the years.
Styles was reportedly invited to Swift and Kelce’s wedding but did not attend.
The joke came as Styles began his lengthy MSG residency, which forms part of his global Together, Together tour supporting his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
The residency is scheduled to run through October, with 30 performances at the New York venue.
Styles’ opening night also featured an emotional tribute to Dolly Parton, who died shortly before the residency began.
He performed Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” and encouraged the audience to join him in honouring the country music icon.
