Police have taken Md Rustam Ali, the assistant director of Sherpur District Passport Office, into custody along with a woman following suspicious activity at his official residence.
The duo was detained at midnight on Tuesday from the third floor of the passport office building located in the Nabinagar area of Sherpur town.
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Md Sohail Rana confirmed the matter.
According to locals, residents became suspicious after observing an unfamiliar woman entering the assistant director’s residence around 10pm.
A team from the Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene and took both individuals into custody for interrogation.
The OC Sohail said the pair were brought to the station for verification of information.
“During preliminary questioning, the woman was identified as a resident of the Mirpur area in Kushtia district. The assistant director has claimed she is a distant sister-in-law,” the OC added.
Police officials added that further details regarding the matter will be disclosed once the investigation is complete.
