A Dhaka tribunal has sentenced six men to jail until death for abducting and raping two young women in South Keraniganj of Dhaka four years ago.
The incident took place in 2022 when the victims were returning home after attending a friend’s birthday celebration.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal‑4 delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Each convict was also fined Tk100,000, Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam said.
The convicts are Rahul (23), Md Diamond (20), Afsar Uddin Onim (22), Parvez Haque Palash (25), Minhaj alias Minhaj Abedin (21), and Minhaj alias Babu alias Minhaj Babu (24).
Rahul remains absconding, while the others were sent to prison after the verdict. Arrest warrants have been issued against the fugitive.
Case records show that on 25 June 2022, the two women had dinner at Pankauri restaurant in Keraniganj. While looking for an autorickshaw in Shubhadda, six men intercepted them, assaulted them, took them to a field, snatched their mobile phones, and raped them.
Friends of the victims later informed South Keraniganj police, who rescued them. On 29 June that year, one victim’s father filed a case.
Following investigation, SI Sharjit Kumar Ghosh submitted charges against the six accused. The tribunal framed charges, heard testimony from 12 witnesses, and after defense arguments and closing statements, announced the judgement.
