After rewriting the record books in cinemas, Michael, the blockbuster biopic on the King of Pop, is set to make its streaming debut. The film will begin streaming on Starz from 10 August, following a hugely successful theatrical run. Deadline first reported the release date.
The Lionsgate production, which has become the studio’s highest-grossing film of all time with more than $1 billion at the global box office, arrives on streaming after a 108-day exclusive theatrical window. Released on 24 April, the film opened with $97.2 million in North America and $217 million worldwide, marking the biggest opening ever for a musical biopic.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan and produced by Graham King, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson, in the lead role. It will be available across all Starz apps, streaming and on-demand platforms. The Starz television channel will also premiere the film on 10 August at 7pm ET/PT.
Michael received an A- CinemaScore and earned a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also became the third film of the year to surpass $1 billion at the worldwide box office, joining Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and Universal/Illumination’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The film now holds the record as the highest-grossing biopic in history, surpassing Oppenheimer. It also ranks as the highest-grossing musical biopic, overtaking Graham King’s Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $911 million globally.
With its arrival on Starz, Michael joins other Lionsgate titles on the platform, including The Housemaid and Russell Crowe’s Beast.
