NU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ASM Amanullah has announced the formation of Cyber Security Clubs at affiliated colleges across the country to raise awareness of cybercrime and equip students with up-to-date knowledge on cyber security.
He made the announcement on Sunday while addressing a cyber security seminar as chief guest at Lalmatia Government Women’s College in the capital. During the programme, he also inaugurated the college’s Cyber Security Club.
The special awareness seminar, titled “Online Safety: Protect Yourself from Cybercrimes”, was organised by the Cyber Security Club of the National University’s Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security.
Addressing the seminar, the vice-chancellor said cybercrime had become increasingly complex alongside advances in technology. He noted that online fraud, data theft, identity fraud, financial scams and the misuse of social media were creating new risks for individuals and society.
“The greater the use of technology, the greater the need for cyber awareness,” he said.
He added that a country’s digital progress could only be meaningful if its citizens were able to use technology safely and responsibly. Young students, he said, must develop not only technological skills but also a sound understanding of cyber ethics, data security and responsible digital behaviour. Most people fall victim to cybercrime because of a lack of awareness, he added.
Prof Amanullah stressed the need for regular seminars, workshops and training programmes on cyber awareness at educational institutions to create a safe digital environment for students. He said there was no alternative to ensuring cyber security if the benefits of technology were to be fully realised.
Advising students, he urged them to be cautious before sharing personal information online, avoid responding to unknown links or messages, use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. He said an informed generation could play an effective role in building a cybercrime-free and secure Bangladesh.
The seminar was chaired by Prof Sultana Mahmuda Yasmin, principal of Lalmatia Government Women’s College. National University Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain attended as special guest.
Cyber security expert Tanvir Hasan Zoha and Md Mahbubul Alam, PPM, Director (Training) at the Bangladesh Police Staff College, presented papers on cyber security awareness.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof Dr Mohammad Bin Kashem, head of the National University’s Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security.
The seminar was supervised by Md Mohibul Hasan, president of the Cyber Security Club, and Md Delowar Hossain Sami, the club’s secretary.
