International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert F Houngbo arrived in Dhaka on Sunday morning for a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.
Houngbo is scheduled to hold a courtesy meeting with Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Sunday and meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, according to a Labour and Employment Ministry press release.
Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on improving labour standards and workplace conditions, protecting workers’ rights, expanding social protection, developing skills and addressing wider labour market issues.
The talks are also likely to cover challenges facing the ready-made garment sector and the informal labour market, as well as Bangladesh’s implementation of international labour standards.
Houngbo, a Togolese national, took office as the ILO’s 11th director-general in October 2022. He is the first African to lead the organisation in its more than century-long history.
