A sub-assistant engineer of Bangladesh Railway was allegedly stabbed to death by a woman in the Mohakhali TB Gate area of Banani on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Mamun Mia. Police have detained a woman, identified as Beauty Akter, in connection with the incident.
According to the house owner Sumon, the incident occurred on the third floor of the building. Upon hearing screams at midday, Suman found the youth lying in a pool of blood with two stab wounds to his abdomen and his genitals severed.
Mamun was initially rushed to a local hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the afternoon, where he succumbed to his injuries in the evening.
Mamun hailed from Malihati village in Ishwarganj Upazila, Mymensingh. His uncle, Muksed Ali Bhuiyan, arrived at the hospital after being informed of the situation via telephone.
Family sources revealed that Mamun had joined Bangladesh Railway as a sub-assistant engineer in Dhaka on 1 July. His wife, Shahina Akter, who is seven months pregnant, currently resides in their village.
Banani Police Station Inspector (Operations) AKM Moin Uddin confirmed that Beauty Akter was detained for questioning following the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the flat belonged to Beauty, and Mamun visited her there on Saturday morning.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Tareq Hasan of Banani Police Station said the police were alerted via the 999-emergency helpline. He noted that Beauty Akter had rented the apartment just one day prior, on Friday.
“Both individuals were married, and it is suspected they were involved in an extramarital affair,” the SI said, adding that the police are still working to determine the exact motive behind the murder.
